How much food per day
In kilograms, as the scale showed it.
Only if you are working on the weight. The ration is then computed on the target, not on the current weight — feeding for the current one is what kept it there.
Fill in the fields above and the result appears on its own.
How it is calculated
First the resting energy requirement (RER) is computed as 70 × weight0.75, published by the National Research Council. That is multiplied by a factor for life stage, neuter status and activity — the factor table follows the published NRC and FEDIAF guidelines. The calories are then divided by the food's energy density (kcal per 100 g) — either a typical category value, or the figure off the bag, which always wins.
Activity is not applied to a growing animal — the published tables do not modify growth factors with it. For a senior the midpoint of the wide published range (1.1–1.6 × RER) is used, because the formula is less precise here than weight monitoring is.
Where this comes from
- National Research Council (2006). Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats. — the RER formula and energy factors.
- FEDIAF (2024). Nutritional Guidelines for Complete and Complementary Pet Food. — growth and weight-management factors.
- WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee — the recommended clinical calculation.
This is an estimate from publicly published rules, not veterinary advice. A sick, nursing or pregnant animal is a vet's decision.
