How it is calculated
The published range is 44–66 ml per kilogram of body weight per day in a thermoneutral environment, water in the food included. Wet food is typically 75–85% water (80% is used here), dry food only 6–10% (8% is used) — which is why the same cat on wet food drinks much less from the bowl without being dehydrated. Sustained drinking above 100 ml/kg/day is the published clinical threshold for polydipsia — a reason for a check-up, not a diagnosis on its own.
Where this comes from
- Merck Veterinary Manual — Nutritional Requirements of Small Animals, “Water” — the 44–66 ml/kg/day range.
- National Research Council (2006). Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats. — a consistent 45–55 ml/kg/day range for cats.
This is an estimate from publicly published rules, not veterinary advice. A sick, nursing or pregnant animal is a vet's decision.
